I often tell my out-of-state friends, “I live where you vacation.” As a Miami resident, the aforementioned statement rings true for those of us who live here. With year-round sunny weather (throw in the occasional rainy day), the Magic City offers so many attractions, which brings me to the crux of this post: Things to do when you’re in Miami — like a local.
PLACES
The attractions here in the 305 are endless. We’ve got Jungle Island, Villa Vizcaya, Miami Seaquarium, Zoo Miami, American Airlines Arena (Let’s go Heat!), Venetian Pool, Pérez Art Museum, Olympia Theater and more. One of my most favorite attractions is the Adrienne Arsht Center (1300 Biscayne, Blvd., Miami). Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, it offers stellar live performances such as Annie, Jersey Boys, Wicked and more.
DINING
Miami is brimming with IT restaurants. It’s home to famous haunts such as Nobu, Joe’s Stone Crab, The Forge, Zuma, Prime 112, db Bistro Moderne and more. Miami is also happens to be the home of the world’s most famous Cuban restaurant — Versailles (3555 SW 8th Street, Miami). Locals and tourists alike flock to this mirror-laden restaurant for its famous Cuban cuisine (picture mouth-watering croquetas and caramel flan). Delish.
SHOPPING
Nestled in the swanky neighborhood of Bal Harbour, you can scoop up designer labels and delicious eats at Bal Harbour Shops (9700 Collins Ave., Bal Harbour). The crown jewel of luxury labels (think Gucci, Valentino, Harry Winston, Ralph Lauren and more), the open-air mall is Miami’s version of New York’s Madison Avenue and Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive. Also worth noting? Bal Harbour Shops has been touted as the world’s most productive mall by sales per square feet.
RELAXATION
Lastly, let’s talk rest and relaxation. Sure, Miami is home to a smattering of spas but the most Zen-like experiences can be found in our own backyard — the beach. Locals love the beach on Third Street on Miami Beach. We’re also fond of the long stretches of sand along Key Biscayne and families flock to Matheson Hammock Park for its natural beauty. Simply said, our stunning beaches are Miami’s number one attraction…and the source of pure happiness.
