Last night I attended the National Private Preview of the new Ferrari 488 GTB and let me just say #WordsAreNotEnough. Used as the official hashtag for the newest model, the 488 GTB needs to be seen to be believed.
Forty years since the unveiling of Ferrari’s first ever mid-rear-engined V8 berlinetta, the 308 GTB, the car brand is creating a new chapter in its 8-cylinder history in the shape of the 488 GTB.
The story behind its name? The 488 GTB moniker marks a return to the classic Ferrari model designation with the 488 in its name indicating the engine’s unitary displacement, while the GTB stands for Gran Turismo Berlinetta. The 488 GTB provides unparalleled performance and makes extreme power controllable to an unprecedented level even by less expert drivers.
Designed by the Ferrari Styling Center, the 488 GTB features very sculptural flanks which are the key to its character. Its large signature air intake scallop is a nod to the original 308 GTB and is divided into two sections by a splitter.
As for its performance, it offers a power V8 (90 degree turbo) engine and vehicle response time of 0 to 62 mph in 3 seconds flat and 0 to 124 mph in 8.3 seconds. These attributes give the 488 GTB a unique character and guarantee unmatched driving pleasure to drivers of all abilities. To achieve this feat, Ferrari drew on its experience in both F1 and GT racing, in which the 458 holds the WEC title and has won its category in two editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Inside, you’ll find the usual driver-focused cockpit and for the first time, keyless start is supported. The 488 GTB’s cabin is designed to exude extreme sportiness without sacrificing occupant comfort. The cockpit is tailored to the driver’s needs and boasts a lighter, horizontally more compact dashboard featuring ultra-sporty air vents inspired by military.
