CORAL GABLES LIFE AND HISTORY

THE COLLECTION has called Coral Gables, Florida “home” for over 30 years. Now that I reflect on this notion…that’s a lot of commutes through this gorgeous neighborhood nestled in Dade County. So I feel as though a blog post celebrating Coral Gables is in order.

Here’s a little history for you: Now celebrating its 90th anniversary, Coral Gables is the realized vision of its founder, George Merrick. Merrick had a fantasy — and that was to turn his family’s grapefruit plantation and its surrounding tropical wilderness into a city. Inspired by the romantic Spanish and Italian tales he read in his youth, Merrick’s dream city would bring those faraway places to life in the lush tropical setting of South Florida. He would name it after his childhood home — Coral Gables. And, clearly, he pulled off this tremendous feat!

Today, Coral Gables remains one of the most desirable zip codes in all of Florida. It also boasts some of the most gorgeous and entertaining attractions for both locals and tourists alike. Where to go, you ask? Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses (and more!) at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens (10901 Old Cutler Road). Another favorite local haunt is Matheson Hammock Park (9610 Old Cutler Road) where you can cool off at the beach.

The Biltmore Hotel  (1200 Anastasia Avenue), just so happens to be the centerpiece of Merrick’s vision and serves as the area’s most preeminent milestone. Envision a stunning hotel replete with hand-painted frescos on barrel-vaulted ceilings, brilliant  travertine  floors,  fine  marble  columns,  intricate  leaded  glass fixtures,  carved  mahogany  furnishings, 600,000 galloon pool  and  lavish  gardens.

In the arts and culture arena, Coral Gables boasts theatrics and more. Be sure to check out a live performance at the Actors’ Playhouse at The Miracle Theatre (280 Miracle Mile). For bibliophiles, there’s Books & Books (265 Aragon Avenue) and as the shop’s name implies, scoop up a well curated mix of New York Times bestsellers to gorgeous coffee table tomes. Authors often pop in for talks and book signings, too.

But what do I love most about my drive to and from work? The area’s broad, planted boulevards, golf courses and a country clubs. I always admire the stately Mediterranean homes, Banyan trees, and tropical foliage lining its quiet streets. It’s paradise. Well done, Merrick.
